Colorado Hiking Gear Guide: Dress for Adventure
Colorado's majestic mountains offer a paradise for hikers of all experience levels. But with diverse terrains and ever-changing weather, preparation is key. Here are 5 essential gear items to make your Colorado hike a success.
Layers! Layers! Layers!
Colorado's climate is known for its dramatic shifts. Dressing in layers allows you to adjust to temperature changes throughout your hike. Starting with a moisture-wicking base layer (think merino wool or synthetics) is key. It keeps you cool in the summer and warm in the winter while also being super soft and comfortable. Depending on temperatures, you can follow that with an insulating mid-layer (fleece or down jacket), and top it off with a waterproof and windproof outer shell. We love Patagonia for their variety of outer shell jackets. I’ve personally had mine for over 15 years and its still going strong.

Comfortable Hiking Boots
Proper footwear is crucial for navigating Colorado's rocky trails. Invest in a sturdy pair of hiking boots with good ankle support and aggressive treads for traction on loose terrain. We love these Columbia Granite Trail Mid Waterproof Hiking Shoe

Waterproof Hiking Pants
Colorado's afternoon thunderstorms can roll in quickly. A good pair of waterproof hiking pants will keep you dry and comfortable on the trail. Look for pants made from breathable fabrics like Gore-Tex or similar materials. They'll also help block wind and protect your legs from scrapes and abrasions on the trail.
Columbia Women's Saturday Trail Stretch Pant
We love the classic fit and feel of these hiking pants. Columbia Women's Saturday Trail Pant features water and stain repellent fabric for protection against harsh stains and liquids and UPF 50 to protect against harmful sun rays. We also love the roll up pant leg feature for when the weather starts to really warm up.
Hydration Backpack or Daypack
Staying hydrated is essential, especially at higher altitudes. A backpack with a built-in hydration reservoir allows you to easily access water throughout your hike. Look for packs with comfortable straps and good ventilation to prevent back sweat. Alternatively, you could get a lightweight daypack/backpack to carry all of your hiking essentials: a water bottle, snacks (we love local company Patter Bar), your extra layers and electrolytes (Nuun is our favorite) to keep your body refreshed and fueled for the trails ahead. Just ensure you have more than enough H2O!

Camelbak is the name in hydration packs! This one is ideal for short hikes and can be packed away for spur-of-the-moment adventures. It’s lightweight and breathable with added cargo space, for all-day comfort.

Why we love this daypack: It’s packable and super lightweight only weighing 0.6lbs but has a capacity of 10 liters and allows you to pack your essentials.
Rain Jacket
A reliable rain jacket is an essential companion for any hiker venturing into the mountains. Look for a jacket made from waterproof materials like Gore-Tex or similar fabrics. These materials create a barrier that keeps rain out while allowing moisture vapor from your sweat to escape, ensuring you stay dry and comfortable throughout your hike. A good rain jacket should fit comfortably over your layers without being too baggy or too tight. Consider a design with features like adjustable cuffs and hem to fine-tune the fit and prevent wind or rain from sneaking in.
MARMOT Women's Precip Eco Waterproof Rain Jacket
One of our favorite brands for outdoor gear is Marmot. Durable, waterproof, and breathable: Marmot NanoPro lamination unites tech with the outdoors for the best in performance.
